The trade offs

In its favour

  • HR management is a critical business function in all organisations, creating strong and consistent demand for qualified HR professionals.
  • Programme offered by multiple universities including both public and private, providing institutional choice and flexible study modes.
  • Kibabii University offers affordable fees (~KES 129,125/year) compared to private institutions.
  • Programme emphasises business and strategic dimensions of HR, preparing graduates for senior HR leadership roles.

Against it

  • UoN, JKUAT, and MUT fee data not independently verified, limiting complete cost comparison.
  • Private university fees (KES 180,000/year at MKU) are significantly higher than public university options.
  • Programme may overlap with Master of Human Resource and MBA HR concentration, causing confusion for prospective students.
  • HR technology and analytics are rapidly evolving, requiring continuous self-learning beyond the programme curriculum.

Industry links

Common misconceptions

  • HR management is just about payroll and administration.

Modern HR management is a strategic function covering talent management, organisational development, change management, and business alignment, far beyond payroll and administration.

  • This programme is the same as the Master of Human Resource.

While closely related, this programme is categorised under Business and Economics, emphasising the business and strategic dimensions of HR management.

  • HR does not require data or analytics skills.

Modern HR management increasingly relies on HR analytics, workforce metrics, and data-driven decision-making, making analytical skills essential.

  • An MBA is better than a specialised HR Master's.

A specialised HR Master's provides deeper HR knowledge and skills, while an MBA provides broader business knowledge. The choice depends on career goals.

  • HR is a cost centre, not a value creator.

Effective HR management creates significant value through talent optimisation, engagement, productivity improvement, and organisational development.

  • This programme is only for HR professionals.

HR management skills are valuable for all managers and leaders who manage people, not just HR specialists.
