Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Physiology

The Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Physiology is a postgraduate research programme offered at the University of Nairobi through the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. The programme trains scholars to conduct advanced research on physiological processes in animals, including comparative animal physiology, endocrinology, reproductive physiology, and adaptation physiology, contributing to animal health, production, and biomedical research in Kenya.

Students engage with advanced comparative physiology, endocrinology, neurophysiology, reproductive physiology, environmental physiology, and research methodology. The programme is delivered by thesis, requiring candidates to develop a research proposal, conduct independent laboratory research, and produce a doctoral dissertation that makes an original contribution to veterinary physiology.

Kenya's diverse livestock and wildlife populations face unique physiological challenges related to heat stress, altitude, nutrition, and disease. The programme addresses national priorities under Vision 2030 and the Kenya Veterinary Policy by training researchers who can improve animal production, welfare, and adaptation through physiological research.

Teaching methods include supervised research, laboratory experiments, seminars, and thesis writing. Students have access to UoN's physiology laboratories at the Upper Kabete campus and conduct research on diverse animal species including livestock, wildlife, and laboratory animals.

Graduates pursue careers as university lecturers, veterinary physiology researchers, biomedical researchers, and animal science consultants in universities, KALRO, research institutions, and the livestock industry. The programme provides advanced expertise for leadership roles in physiology research and animal science.

This programme is ideal for holders of a Master's degree in comparative physiology, veterinary physiology, veterinary medicine, or related biomedical sciences who are committed to advancing knowledge in animal physiology.

The trade offs

In its favour

  • Contributes to understanding animal adaptation to Kenyan environmental conditions
  • Strong institutional links with KALRO, ILRI, and KWS
  • Research contributes to animal and human health
  • Comparative physiology research has both veterinary and biomedical applications

Against it

  • Limited direct industry demand outside academia
  • Laboratory equipment is expensive
  • Requires strong biological and physiological knowledge
  • Tuition fees are relatively high at KES 396,000 per year

What it costs

Tuition at both ends of the market, and how to pay for it.

Common misconceptions

  • Veterinary physiology is only about animal organs

Veterinary physiology encompasses comparative physiology across species, endocrinology, neurophysiology, reproduction, environmental adaptation, and metabolic regulation, with applications in animal production, health, and biomedical research.

  • A PhD in veterinary physiology has limited career prospects

Graduates work in universities, KALRO, ILRI, and research institutions, with demand for expertise in animal adaptation, production physiology, and comparative biomedical research.

  • Veterinary physiology research is not relevant to Kenya

Kenya's diverse livestock and wildlife face unique physiological challenges from heat stress, drought, and disease, making physiology research critical for animal production and conservation.

  • Veterinary physiology is only for veterinarians

The programme accepts graduates with Master's degrees in comparative physiology, zoology, biomedical sciences, or related fields, not only veterinary medicine graduates.
