Diploma in Social Ministry

The Diploma in Social Ministry is a programme designed for pastoral and development agents involved in church and community work. Offered at Tangaza University College through the Institute for Social Transformation, the programme equips religious and lay workers with skills to innovate and promote the social apostolate in the church and build strong collaboration for effective Christian ministry in the modern world.

The curriculum covers social ministry foundations, Catholic social teaching, pastoral ministry, community development, social justice, peace and reconciliation, human development, project management, faith-based advocacy, church and society, research methods and practicum. Students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in social ministry and community engagement.

The programme bridges the gap between theory and practice of modern-day church and community management. It responds to the need for trained pastoral agents who can integrate faith-based approaches with social development, community organising and social justice work in church and community settings.

The programme is delivered through blended online and face-to-face learning, lectures, community engagement exercises, pastoral workshops, field visits, research projects, group discussions and practicum. Students gain hands-on experience through supervised practicum in parishes, church organisations or faith-based NGOs.

Graduates pursue careers as social ministry coordinators, pastoral workers, community development workers, church programme officers and faith-based development workers in parishes, dioceses, church organisations and faith-based NGOs. They can also progress to a Bachelor of Arts in Social Ministry in Mission or related degree programmes.

Prospective students should have interest in pastoral ministry, social justice and community development. The programme is suitable for religious and lay workers seeking to combine faith-based service with social development.

Common misconceptions

  • Social ministry is only for priests and religious sisters.

Social ministry is for both religious and lay workers involved in church and community work. The diploma equips all pastoral agents with social ministry skills.

  • Social ministry is just about church work.

Social ministry integrates faith-based service with community development, social justice, peace-building and advocacy, extending beyond church walls to community engagement.

  • A diploma in social ministry has no career prospects outside the church.

Graduates can work in faith-based NGOs, community organisations and development agencies, and can progress to a Bachelor of Arts in Social Ministry in Mission.

  • Social ministry is the same as theology.

While social ministry has theological foundations, it focuses on practical social action, community development and social justice, rather than theological study alone.
