Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education

The Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education is a KUCCPS-listed programme that prepares trainees to become secondary school teachers. The curriculum covers educational psychology, curriculum studies, subject-specific teaching methods for two chosen teaching subjects, educational assessment, and teaching practice.

Trainees develop competencies in lesson planning, classroom management, subject-specific pedagogy, guidance and counselling, and educational assessment. The programme requires each trainee to select two teaching subjects from options including mathematics, sciences, languages, humanities, and technical subjects.

Kenya's expanded secondary school system, driven by free day secondary education and the CBC rollout, creates sustained demand for qualified teachers. Graduates are employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and private schools nationwide.

Training is delivered through teacher training colleges and university TVET departments over three years, including two terms of teaching practice. Assessment includes continuous assessment tests, teaching practice evaluation, and KNEC final examinations.
