Diploma in Primary Teacher Education

The Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) is a KNEC-examined programme that prepares trainees to teach in primary schools (Grade 1 to 6) under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). The programme is accredited by the Ministry of Education and examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Trainees develop competencies in professional studies, subject content across the primary curriculum, pedagogy, special needs education, guidance and counselling, and ICT integration in education. The curriculum combines coursework with extensive teaching practice in primary schools.

Kenya's education sector is implementing the CBC, requiring qualified primary teachers with pedagogical training aligned to the new curriculum. The programme supports the Ministry of Education's teacher professionalisation agenda.

The course is delivered through classroom sessions, micro-teaching, and supervised teaching practice. Trainees undertake three months of micro-teaching as a prerequisite for teaching practice, followed by two terms of practicum in primary schools.

Graduates qualify to teach in primary schools (Grade 1 to 6) and are eligible for employment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The programme is being transitioned into the Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE), which combines primary and early childhood teaching qualifications.

This programme is suitable for individuals with a KCSE mean grade of C (plain) who aspire to become primary school teachers. It provides professional teaching qualifications for Kenya's primary education sector.
