Diploma in Information Technology
The Diploma in Information Communication Technology is a three-year programme examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and offered at technical and vocational training institutions across Kenya. It equips students with competencies in software development, system analysis and design, database management, networking, and web programming. The programme is accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) under the TVET Act, 2013.
Module I covers introduction to ICT and ethics, computer applications, communication skills, structured programming, computational mathematics, entrepreneurship, and operating systems. Students learn computer fundamentals, programming basics, and system operations. Module II advances to systems analysis and design, object-oriented programming, computer applications II, visual programming, quantitative techniques, database management systems, and a practicum.
Module III focuses on management information systems, principles and practice of management, data communication and networking, internet-based programming, and a research project. Students learn to develop web applications, manage networks, and design enterprise ICT solutions.
The programme combines theory with extensive laboratory sessions and practical projects. Students learn to programme in multiple languages, design databases, configure networks, and develop complete ICT solutions for business problems. A trade project in Module III requires students to develop a functional management system.
Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) or a pass in a Craft Certificate in ICT. The programme is widely available at national polytechnics, technical training institutes, and ICT-focused colleges across Kenya.
Graduates pursue careers as ICT officers, system administrators, database administrators, web developers, network technicians, and software developers in businesses, government, NGOs, and ICT companies. The programme provides a progression pathway to a degree in computer science, information technology, or related fields.
The programme includes a compulsory industrial attachment. Government-sponsored students placed through KUCCPS receive capitation funding, and HELB loans are available for eligible students. The standardised annual tuition fee at public TVET institutions is KES 67,189.
