Diploma in Emergency Medical Technician

The Diploma in Emergency Medical Technology is a three-year KMTC programme examined by KNEC that prepares learners for careers as emergency medical technicians. The course covers human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, patient assessment, trauma management, and community health, equipping graduates to provide pre-hospital emergency care.

Students develop competencies in patient assessment, airway management, trauma care, cardiac life support, patient stabilisation, ambulance operations, and emergency response coordination. The programme also covers medical microbiology, biochemistry, and research methods in health, ensuring graduates have both practical emergency skills and a solid scientific foundation for clinical decision-making.

Kenya's emergency medical services sector is expanding, with increasing recognition of the need for professional pre-hospital care. Road traffic accidents, industrial incidents, and medical emergencies require trained responders who can provide immediate life-saving interventions. The government's commitment to universal health coverage has highlighted the need for emergency medical services across all counties.

The programme combines classroom instruction with laboratory practicals, clinical skills demonstrations, and supervised clinical attachment. Students train in KMTC campuses with simulation equipment, practice on anatomical models, and undertake clinical placements in hospitals and emergency response settings. Assessment includes continuous practical evaluations, written examinations, and clinical competency assessments.

Graduates find employment as emergency medical technicians, ambulance officers, rescue team members, and emergency response coordinators. They work with hospitals, ambulance services, county emergency departments, fire and rescue services, mining companies, and event medical teams. Many serve as first responders in communities, providing critical care during emergencies.

This programme is ideal for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C (plain) and D+ in Biology who are physically fit, emotionally resilient, and passionate about saving lives. The ability to remain calm under pressure and make quick decisions is essential for success in emergency medical services.
