Diploma in Electronics

The Diploma in Electronics is a technical programme that equips students with knowledge and practical skills in electronic circuit design, digital electronics, microprocessor systems, electronic instrumentation, telecommunications and embedded systems. Offered at Kibabii University and Zetech University, the programme prepares students for technical careers in the electronics and electrical engineering sectors.

Kenya's electronics and electrical engineering sector is growing, with increasing demand for technicians who can install, maintain and repair electronic systems in telecommunications, manufacturing, security and consumer electronics. The programme responds to the need for trained electronics technicians supporting industrialisation and technology adoption.

The programme is delivered through lectures, laboratory practicals, workshop sessions, project work, industrial visits, case studies and industrial attachment. Students gain hands-on experience in circuit design, testing, troubleshooting and repair of electronic systems through laboratory sessions and attachment at electronics companies, telecommunications firms or manufacturing plants.

Graduates pursue careers as electronics technicians, maintenance technicians, telecommunications technicians, instrumentation technicians, field service technicians and production technicians in telecommunications companies, electronics manufacturing firms, security systems companies, broadcasting stations and industrial plants. They can also progress to a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Prospective students should have an aptitude for mathematics and physics, interest in technology and hands-on practical work. The programme is suitable for students seeking technical careers in electronics and related fields.

A day as a student

Common misconceptions

  • Electronics is the same as electrical engineering.
