Diploma in Defence and Strategic Studies

The Diploma in Defence and Strategic Studies is a programme that equips military officers and government personnel with knowledge and analytical skills in defence, security and strategy at the operational level. Offered at the Joint Command and Staff College of the National Defence University-Kenya, the programme prepares mid-level officers for advanced responsibilities in command and staff duties.

The curriculum covers national security dynamics, regional and international security, defence policy, strategic studies, operational art, military operations other than war, peace support operations, intelligence studies, international relations, international humanitarian law, leadership and command, research methods and crisis management. Students develop critical thinking and analytical skills for understanding contemporary security challenges.

The programme responds to the need for professionally trained military officers who can navigate complex and evolving security environments. It exposes learners to national, regional and international security dynamics that impact Kenya's national interests and equips them with intellectual attributes for analysing and providing solutions to contemporary security challenges.

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, case studies, research projects, simulations, field visits and directed study. Students engage with academic and military faculty, participate in strategic exercises, and conduct research on contemporary security issues relevant to Kenya and the region.

Graduates are prepared for advanced command and staff appointments within the Kenya Defence Forces and allied militaries. Those from Ministries, Departments and Agencies are equipped for strategic-level policy and security roles. The diploma also provides a pathway to further study at the master's level.

The programme is primarily designed for military officers of the rank of Captain and above from the three services of the KDF, as well as participants from allied countries and Kenyan government Ministries, Departments and Agencies. It is not open to the general public.

A day as a student

A typical day begins with a morning lecture on national security or strategic studies, followed by a seminar discussion on regional security dynamics. Officers also participate in strategic exercises and field visits to security installations.

This programme is open to the general public.
The programme is primarily for KDF officers of the rank of Captain and above, as well as participants from allied countries and Kenyan government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The diploma is the same as the postgraduate diploma.
The award level (Diploma or Postgraduate Diploma) depends on the entry qualifications of the participant. Officers with a first degree receive a Postgraduate Diploma, while those without receive a Diploma.
