Diploma in Counselling (Disaster Management and Trauma Counselling Option)

The Diploma in Counselling (Disaster Management and Trauma Counselling Option) is a KNEC-examined programme listed on KUCCPS. It trains counselling professionals who specialise in providing psychological support to individuals and communities affected by disasters, conflicts, and traumatic events.

The curriculum covers three modules. Module I provides foundation counselling skills including communication, psychology, lifespan development, counselling theories, ethical and legal issues, and personal development. Module II advances to group counselling, multicultural issues, psychological testing, abnormal behaviour, mental health counselling, and research methods. Module III specialises in disaster and human response, disaster management, emergency planning, resource mobilisation, conflict resolution and peace building, first aid, stress and trauma management, crisis intervention, care of the helper, and post-disaster management planning.

Kenya faces recurrent disasters including droughts, floods, conflicts, and public health emergencies, creating demand for trained trauma counsellors who can support affected communities. The devolved government structure and growing recognition of mental health needs have expanded opportunities in county governments, NGOs, and humanitarian organisations.

Training combines classroom theory with supervised practicum in counselling settings, including placements with disaster response organisations and trauma recovery programmes. KNEC examination is conducted at the end of each module.

Graduates work as disaster response counsellors, trauma counsellors, crisis intervention specialists, and psychosocial support officers with NGOs, county governments, the Kenya Red Cross, and humanitarian agencies, with progression routes to degree programmes in psychology or counselling.
