Biomedical Engineering Technology Level 5 is a TVET CDACC-accredited certificate-level programme listed on KUCCPS. It trains biomedical engineering technicians to install, maintain, repair, and manage medical equipment in hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.

Students also learn human anatomy and physiology principles, hospital engineering, refrigeration and air conditioning, hospital organisation and maintenance management, communication skills, digital literacy, and entrepreneurial skills.

Kenya's healthcare sector expansion, with new county hospitals and upgrading of existing facilities, has created growing demand for technicians who can keep medical equipment operational. Most hospitals lack in-house biomedical engineering capacity and rely on trained technicians for equipment uptime.

Training combines classroom theory with workshop practicals and supervised clinical attachment in hospital biomedical engineering departments. CDACC assessment includes written tests, practical demonstrations, and portfolio submissions.

Graduates work as biomedical equipment technicians, medical equipment maintenance assistants, and hospital plant operators, with progression to Level 6 diploma and ultimately degree programmes in biomedical engineering.

A typical day combines theory sessions on anatomy, electronics, or instrumentation with hands-on workshop practicals. Students dismantle and reassemble medical equipment, practise calibration procedures, and learn troubleshooting techniques.   • Biomedical engineering is the same as clinical medicine.

    Biomedical engineering focuses on the technical equipment used in healthcare, not patient diagnosis or treatment. Technicians maintain the machines doctors use.

  • Level 5 is too basic to get a job.

    Level 5 qualifies you as a technician capable of maintaining and repairing medical equipment. Many county hospitals hire Level 5 technicians for their biomedical departments.

  • There is no career progression from Level 5.
