Diploma in Applied Biology

The Diploma in Applied Biology is a TVET CDACC Level 6 qualification that equips learners with competencies to work as applied biologists in research institutions, laboratories, pharmaceutical industries, and agricultural organisations.

The curriculum covers cytological and histological techniques, anatomy and physiology concepts, plant and animal husbandry, taxonomical concepts, ecological techniques, museum and herbarium techniques, immunological techniques, microbiological techniques, parasitological and entomological techniques, genetics principles, biochemical analysis, pharmacological and toxicological techniques, and science laboratory research.

The programme is accredited by TVET CDACC under the Applied Biology Level 6 qualification (ISCED code 0511554) and examined by KNEC in some institutions.

Training combines classroom theory with extensive laboratory practicals in fully equipped science laboratories. Trainees work with microscopes, centrifuges, autoclaves, spectrophotometers, and other laboratory instruments.

Graduates find employment in research institutions, pharmaceutical industries, agricultural research organisations, food processing companies, environmental agencies, hospitals, and educational institutions. Major employers include KEMRI, KALRO, KEFRI, KEBS, NEMA, Ministry of Health laboratories, and county health departments.

The programme suits KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C- who have an interest in biological sciences and laboratory work. It provides a progression pathway to degree programmes in Applied Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Sciences.
