The Diploma in Agriculture is a technical programme that equips students with knowledge and practical skills in crop production, animal production and agricultural enterprise management. Examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the programme is offered at multiple universities and technical training institutions across Kenya.

The curriculum covers crop production, soil science, animal production, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural extension education, mathematics, science, technical drawing, communication skills, ICT, entrepreneurship education, farm business management, environmental management, animal product processing and agricultural project planning. Students develop both theoretical agricultural knowledge and practical production skills.

Kenya's agricultural sector is the backbone of the economy, requiring skilled practitioners who can apply modern farming techniques, manage agricultural enterprises and support agricultural development. The programme responds to the need for technical agricultural personnel who can work in farming, agricultural extension, agribusiness, research support and rural development.

Students gain hands-on experience in crop cultivation, livestock management, soil analysis, farm machinery operation and agricultural processing through practical sessions at university farms and attachment at agricultural organisations.

Graduates pursue careers as agricultural officers, farm managers, extension assistants, agricultural technicians, research assistants, agribusiness officers, project officers and agricultural entrepreneurs in government ministries, county governments, agricultural companies, cooperatives, NGOs, research institutions and self-employment. They can also progress to a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or related degree programmes.

A day as a student

A typical day begins with a morning lecture on crop production or animal production, followed by a practical session at the university farm where students practice planting, fertiliser application or livestock handling. Afternoon sessions may include a laboratory session on soil analysis, a group project on farm business planning, or a field demonstration of agricultural machinery. Students also work on agricultural extension communication exercises and ICT assignments.
