Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering

The Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering is a technical programme that prepares students for careers in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul. Offered at the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC), a constituent college of the National Defence University-Kenya, the programme has two specialisation options: Airframes and Engines, and Avionics.

The curriculum covers aeronautical engineering fundamentals, aircraft structures, aircraft engines, aircraft systems, avionics systems, electrical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics, aircraft maintenance practices, airworthiness regulations, quality assurance, materials science, technical drawing, engineering mathematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and workshop technology. Students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical maintenance skills through laboratory work and workshop sessions.

Kenya's aviation sector requires qualified aeronautical engineering technicians to maintain and repair military and civilian aircraft. The programme responds to the need for skilled personnel who can ensure airworthiness, perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and support aircraft operations in military and civilian aviation environments.

The programme is delivered through lectures, engineering laboratory sessions, workshop practicals, aircraft maintenance demonstrations and industrial attachment. Students gain hands-on experience in aircraft inspection, component repair, engine maintenance and avionics troubleshooting through workshop training at DEFTEC facilities. Specialisation begins in the second year, with students choosing between the Airframes and Engines option or the Avionics option.

Graduates pursue careers as aircraft maintenance technicians, aeronautical engineering technicians, avionics technicians, airframe mechanics, engine mechanics and quality assurance officers in the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Airways, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, airports, maintenance repair organisations and aviation companies. They can also progress to a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering.

Prospective students should have strong science foundations, mechanical aptitude and attention to detail. The programme is suitable for individuals passionate about aviation and aircraft technology, with a commitment to safety and precision.

A day as a student

A typical day begins with a morning lecture on aircraft structures or avionics theory, followed by a workshop practical session inspecting aircraft components or performing engine maintenance procedures. Afternoon sessions may include laboratory work on electrical systems, hydraulics testing, or a demonstration of aircraft maintenance practices in the hangar. Students also work on technical drawing assignments and study airworthiness regulations.

Common misconceptions

  • Aeronautical engineering is only about flying aircraft.

  • The programme is open to all civilian students.

    The programme at DEFTEC is primarily for Kenya Defence Forces personnel. Civilian students can pursue aeronautical engineering at other institutions like the Technical University of Kenya.
