Certificate in Water Engineering

The Certificate in Water Engineering is a KNEC Craft Certificate programme that trains students in water supply, wastewater treatment, and water infrastructure management skills. The course is examined by KNEC and offered across accredited TVET institutions in Kenya. Students learn water supply systems, water treatment, hydraulics, wastewater treatment, water quality, and infrastructure maintenance.

The curriculum covers communication skills, mathematics, science, technical drawing, information communication technology, entrepreneurship, and occupational safety. Core units include introduction to water engineering, water engineering principles, hydraulics, water supply systems, water treatment processes, wastewater treatment, water quality and testing, engineering drawing, environmental sanitation, water infrastructure maintenance, and industrial attachment in a water utility or engineering company.

Kenya's water sector, including water supply projects, sewerage systems, irrigation schemes, and environmental sanitation programmes, creates demand for certified water engineering personnel. Water service providers, county water departments, engineering consultancies, and sanitation projects require trained technicians for water system operations and maintenance.

Training combines classroom theory with practical sessions in laboratory and field environments. Students practice water testing, treatment processes, hydraulics calculations, and infrastructure maintenance under supervised conditions. The programme includes industrial attachment in water utilities or engineering companies where students apply their skills in real water sector environments.

Graduates work as water engineering technicians, water treatment plant assistants, water quality technicians, wastewater treatment assistants, and water infrastructure maintenance assistants in water service providers, county water departments, engineering consultancies, and sanitation projects. The qualification provides a foundation for progression to Diploma in Water Engineering for specialised water engineering and management roles.

A day as a student
