Bachelor of Science in Leather Technology

The Bachelor of Science in Leather Technology is a four-year programme offered at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and the University of Nairobi. It trains students in the processing of hides and skins into leather and the production of leather goods, addressing a critical skills gap in Kenya leather industry.

Students study leather chemistry, tanning processes, leather goods manufacturing, footwear design, quality control, and environmental management in tanneries. The curriculum combines chemistry and engineering fundamentals with specialised leather science courses, ensuring graduates can manage leather factories and offer consultancy services.

Entry requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ with at least C+ in Mathematics and Chemistry, and C in Physics. Diploma holders in Leather Technology or related fields may receive credit transfers. The programme is offered full-time over four academic years.

Graduates work as leather technologists, quality assurance managers, production supervisors, and footwear designers in tanneries, leather goods manufacturers, and cottage industries. They contribute to value addition in the leather value chain, a priority sector under Kenya Vision 2030.

The programme is accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and supports the government big four agenda of manufacturing. Graduates help establish small and medium-scale leather enterprises, creating employment and driving industrialisation.
