Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering is an undergraduate programme offered at Kenyan universities including Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Moi University. The programme integrates engineering principles with management science to optimise complex processes, systems, and organisations in manufacturing, service, and technology sectors.

Students study engineering mathematics, thermodynamics, manufacturing processes, production planning, quality control, operations research, industrial management, and human factors engineering. The curriculum combines engineering theory with practical laboratory work, industrial visits, and supervised industrial attachment to ensure graduates can design, improve, and install integrated systems of people, materials, information, and equipment.

Kenya’s manufacturing sector is a priority under Vision 2030, which targets the sector contributing at least 15% of GDP. The Big Four Agenda further emphasises manufacturing as a key pillar, creating demand for industrial engineers who can improve productivity, reduce waste, and optimise production systems in factories across the country. Industrial engineering skills are also critical for the growing agro-processing, textile, and construction materials industries.

Teaching methods include lectures, laboratory practicals, workshop sessions, industrial visits, computer-aided design practicals, and supervised industrial attachment. At MMUST, the programme is delivered full-time over ten semesters in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, while Moi University offers a Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing, Industrial and Textile Engineering through its School of Engineering.

Graduates pursue careers as production engineers, quality assurance engineers, operations managers, manufacturing engineers, project engineers, and industrial consultants in manufacturing firms, processing companies, logistics firms, government agencies, and consulting firms. The programme is accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).

This programme is ideal for students with strong passes in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry who are interested in optimising systems, improving productivity, and applying engineering principles to manufacturing and service operations.
