Bachelor of Financial Economics
The Bachelor of Financial Economics is a four-year degree programme that combines economic theory with financial analysis and quantitative methods. The programme prepares graduates for careers in banking, investment, financial markets, and economic policy.
The curriculum covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial economics, monetary theory and policy, econometrics, mathematics for economists, statistics, financial instruments and risk management, international economics, taxation, public finance, banking, insurance, and research methods.
Teaching combines lectures, tutorials, practical sessions with financial software, and research projects. Students develop analytical and quantitative skills for financial market analysis, economic modelling, and policy evaluation. The programme includes a research project in the final year.
Graduates pursue careers as financial analysts, investment bankers, economic analysts, risk managers, policy advisors, banking officers, and asset managers. Opportunities exist in commercial banks, investment firms, the Central Bank of Kenya, insurance companies, government ministries, and international organisations.
The programme is offered at Moi University, a public university in Eldoret, and Strathmore University, a private university in Nairobi. Admission at Moi University requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ with C in English and Mathematics. Strathmore requires a B+ aggregate with B+ in Mathematics and an entrance examination.
Accreditation is provided by the Commission for University Education (CUE). Annual tuition is approximately KES 204,000 at Moi University based on KUCCPS data.
