Overview

The curriculum covers disaster theory, risk assessment, emergency response planning, humanitarian logistics, disaster mitigation, climate change adaptation, geographic information systems, community resilience, project management, research methodology, public health in emergencies, conflict and displacement, policy analysis, and sustainable development.

Students develop skills in risk assessment, emergency response coordination, humanitarian logistics management, GIS mapping, project management, policy analysis, community engagement, research methodology, and report writing.

Graduates pursue careers as disaster risk reduction officers, emergency response coordinators, humanitarian programme officers, project managers, policy analysts, and researchers. They find employment in government disaster management agencies, NGOs, international humanitarian organisations, the Kenya Red Cross, UN agencies, and private sector risk management firms.

The programme is offered at MMUST (public, KES 153,000 per year for KUCCPS-sponsored students) at the main campus in Kakamega County.

Accreditation is provided by the Commission for University Education (CUE), the statutory body responsible for quality assurance and regulation of university education in Kenya. Admission requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) with at least C (Plain) in English or Kiswahili.
