A day in the role

Two halves to my week. First, the part AI now handles: AI drafts slide layouts quickly for a 40-deck investor pitch. Then the part that stays mine: distilling the client's narrative, refining the story arc, and making craft and taste calls on every slide. I spend the afternoon in Figma polishing high-stakes board slides, then jump on a call with the client's CFO to align on key data points. The tools do the first pass; the judgement, relationships, and accountability are mine. You coordinate closely with cross functional colleagues to align on immediate deliverables, double checking equipment readiness and standard operating protocols.

In the afternoon, you execute core deliverables, consult with cross functional colleagues, document operational outcomes, and ensure that all equipment and handover notes are fully updated before completing the shift. Before completing the shift, you reconcile physical logs, review operational checklists with the oncoming team, archive incident reports, and brief project supervisors on task completion.

In practice

Corporate presentation designers create visual, brand-aligned slide decks for board meetings, investor pitches, quarterly reviews, and client proposals at companies worldwide. They work in design agencies, in-house brand teams at global banks and telcos, tech startups, and as freelancers serving international clients. Day-to-day work blends hands-on design execution with narrative judgement: structuring a story, distilling a client's message, and ensuring brand consistency. AI tools like Gamma, Beautiful.ai, and Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint now draft slide layouts quickly, but distilling a client's narrative and making craft and taste decisions stays human. The role is the same worldwide whether working locally, remotely, or on an H1B visa, as core skills and procedures are identical.

Core responsibilities include distilling a client's narrative and key message into a compelling slide story structure, operational coordination, and ensuring strict adherence to Kenyan statutory frameworks and quality standards.

Demand concentrates among design agencies, in-house brand teams at banks and telcos (Safaricom, NCBA), e-commerce and fintech startups, media houses, and a large freelance/remote market serving global clients. Remote and freelance routes to global clients pay notably better than local-only roles for the same skill level. The premium goes to candidates who pair the new AI tools with the human judgement this role depends on.

Common misconceptions

  • Presentation designers just make slides look pretty

They design visual communication that supports strategic messaging, ensures brand consistency, and engages audiences. A designer might create an investor pitch deck that raises $50M, distilling complex business strategy into clear visual narratives.

  • Presentation design is just graphic design for slides

Presentation design requires understanding of narrative structure, audience psychology, and business context alongside visual design. A graphic designer who makes slides without understanding the business narrative will produce pretty decks that do not communicate effectively.

  • PowerPoint templates have made presentation designers unnecessary

Templates handle basic needs but high-stakes presentations require custom design that communicates specific messages. A company raising $50M cannot use a template. The custom work remains essential for important presentations.

How to stay ahead

  • Master the category's core AI tools

Get hands-on with the tools doing the first-pass work in this field: Midjourney, Figma AI. The goal is to let AI handle the routine part of the job, AI drafts slide layouts quickly, so your time goes to the judgement-heavy core.

  • Deepen the human-protected judgement

Deliberately build the parts AI cannot do: distilling a client's narrative and message stays human. Seek feedback, mentors and stretch assignments that grow this judgement, it is your long-term moat.

  • Build a verifiable portfolio

Document real work that shows both tool fluency and human judgement. Employers and clients weight demonstrated outcomes, projects, cases, deals, or jobs delivered, far more than credentials alone.

  • Stay current on the 2026-2028 shift

Track how presentation designer (corporate decks) work is changing quarter by quarter. Read WEF Future of Jobs, Stanford HAI AI Index and sector reports; adjust your skill plan before demand shifts, not after.

Kenyan market notes

Demand for corporate presentation designers in Kenya is concentrated among design agencies, in-house brand teams, and the freelance/remote market. Major employers include design agencies (Wanji Creative, Dotsavvy, Yellow House), in-house brand and marketing teams at Safaricom, NCBA, Equity Bank, KCB, and Kenya Airways, fintech startups, and media houses. A large freelance and remote market serves global clients through platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. Salaries range from KES 50,000-90,000 for entry-level designers, to KES 100,000-180,000 for mid-career designers, with senior designers and design leads earning KES 200,000-380,000. Freelancers serving international clients can earn significantly more, with day rates of KES 15,000-40,000. AI tools now absorb much of the routine layout work, so the decisive hiring filter is the human-protected core of the role: distilling a client's narrative and message. Candidates who pair tool fluency with design judgement command a clear premium.
